Pakistan Khawaja Asif accuses Fazlur Rehman of withholding support for constitutional amendments

Maulana Fazlur Rehman was chastised by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif over his opposition to the government's proposed constitutional revisions. Asif told reporters on Sunday outside Parliament House that by Monday morning, it would be obvious what the situation was with regard to the necessary number of votes for the revisions.

Regarding the current situation, Asif voiced worries that the required votes might not be obtained. We don't appear to have the numbers. Since this morning, I have been in the National Assembly, and although I cannot verify the precise number, it seems that we were short, which is why the legislation has not advanced.

Asif had already spoken to the media, stating that the reports regarding Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa's term extension were untrue. "Anything that is occurring is for the greater good, and even if people doubt our intentions, we are operating appropriately," he continued. We are hoping Maulana Fazlur Rehman will cast his vote in our favor.

The Senate and National Assembly meetings, which were scheduled to address the significant constitutional modifications, have been rescheduled until Monday at 12:30 p.m.

It is important to remember that the government met with Rehman in an attempt to get his support for the constitutional modifications. He also had separate discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.

Rehman was also visited by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to solicit his support on the proposed modifications.
