ISLAMABAD: In an effort to curb the militancy in the province, which has seen multiple deadly attacks in recent months, the nation's military and civil leadership approved a "comprehensive military operation" against terrorist organizations in Balochistan on Tuesday.
The Federal Apex Committee, a powerful civil and military counterterrorism body, made the decision. The meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was attended by key government officials, chief ministers, federal ministers, and Army Chief Gen. Syed Asim Munir.
The gathering was held in the midst of an increase in terrorist assaults, especially in the provinces of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan. The terrorists were targeting civilians and foreigners to impede Pakistan's economic development, according to a statement released following the conference.
Participants authorized a full-scale military operation against terrorist groups in Balochistan, such as the Majeed Brigade, BLA, BLF, and BRAS, who target foreigners and innocent civilians in an effort to impede Pakistan's economic development by fostering insecurity.
For decades, Pakistan has been fighting a low-level insurgency in Balochistan, but in recent months, terrorist strikes have increased at an unprecedented rate. Chinese interests in Pakistan have been the target of terrorist organizations based in Balochistan.
In October, a suicide bomber killed two Chinese people when he crashed his vehicle loaded with explosives into the convoy outside Karachi International Airport. The act was attributed to the suicide arm of the banned BLA, Majeed Brigade.
Additionally, the terrorists killed nearly two dozen people in a horrific terrorist strike at Quetta railway stations. Pakistan's decision to begin a full-scale military campaign against these terrorist organizations is thought to have been motivated in part by China's security worries.
Attacks on its citizens in Pakistan are causing China to become more concerned, and the country is looking for a comprehensive plan to address the issue. According to the official handout, "Reinvigorating Pakistan's Counter Terrorism (CT) Campaign" was the main item on the agenda.
The participants received a briefing on the changing security environment, counterterrorism efforts, and other important issues, such as the overall state of law and order, measures against attempts to incite sub-nationalism, religious extremism, addressing the illegal spectrum and the connection between crime and terrorism, subversion and disinformation campaigns, and other matters.
In order to successfully handle these complex issues, the Apex Committee emphasized the need for a unifying national narrative and a single political voice. It was emphasized that full national consensus and cross-party political backing were essential.
