Around 100 vehicles were in a convoy traveling from Peshawar to Parachinar, and another sizable convoy was en route to Peshawar from Parachinar when suddenly, five different locations, gunmen opened fire on them, according to two senior officials of the local administration in the unrest-plagued Kurram who spoke to The News.
The assailants were aware of the movement of two distinct convoys coming from both sides, and it appeared to be a pre-planned attack. A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The News that the gunmen killed innocent people, including women, by randomly firing on the convoys at five different locations as soon as they arrived in Lower Kurram. Seven women and a kid were among the 39 bodies that were gathered, he said. When hundreds of people, including the victims' family, arrived to the scene of the incident, tensions increased, and several of the bodies were reported missing, the official said. He claims that some of these individuals then responded, opened fire on the other sect's members, and allegedly murdered some.
The officials claimed that the persons in other vehicles went into locals' homes and sought safety there. "Relatives were searching frantically for some of the passengers' missing family members, but they were unable to contact them because cellular phone service had been suspended." The government official contended, "We have been telling people that they might be safe and could have taken shelter in the houses of residents."
Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, also acknowledged that 42 people had died in the terrorist attack. 39 persons were martyred and 29 others were injured in a regrettable occurrence that occurred in the Kurram tribal territory.
