Citing its involvement in violent attacks during student protests that resulted in the overthrow of the autocratic government in August, Bangladesh suspended the student section of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's party on Thursday.
Chhatra League
According to an official announcement released on Wednesday, the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student branch of the Bangladesh Awami League, has been outlawed by the government of Bangladesh under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The notification claims that throughout the previous 15 years, when the Awami League was in power, the Chhatra League had engaged in actions that compromised public safety.
During the Awami League's previous three terms in power, BCL leaders and activists have been the target of a number of claims, including rape, murder, attacks, and extortion.
Additionally, the group has been charged with establishing "torture rooms" in public university hallways nationwide in an attempt to target general students.
The Chhatra League has long been accused of extortion; the most recent charges surfaced during the July insurrection.
The notification goes on to say that there is enough proof that BCL persisted in plotting, causing destruction, and carrying out terrorist attacks even after the Awami League was overthrown on August 5.
Consequently, Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 was used by the interim government to outlaw the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
