Senate passes 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill amid PTI boycott

he Senate commenced voting on the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, also known as the Constitutional Package, and eventially passed it on Sunday. The legislation proposes a series of amendments, including an extension of the Chief Justice’s term.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the measure in the Senate after it had previously been passed by the federal cabinet with the support of coalition partners. Before senators cast their votes, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani read the amended bill's contents at the beginning of the session.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan would serve a three-year term under the new law. The new Chief Justice will be chosen by a 12-member legislative committee consisting of the three most senior judges.

Eight members of the National Assembly and four members of the Senate will make up this committee, which will recommend a candidate to the prime minister, who will then send it to the president for final approval.

Among the many changes the bill suggests is the important fix of setting the Chief Justice of Pakistan's term at three years. Before the Senate vote, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar spoke to the media to allay rumors about this move.

In response to rumors that the Chief Justice's term will be extended, Tarar stated that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa had not indicated any desire to do so. "The top judge expressed his disinterest in extending his tenure in the three meetings I had with him, stating that any changes would take effect following his retirement," Tarar said.

The law minister spoke into detail about the main elements of the bill during a press conference at Parliament House, accompanied by Attaullah Tarar, the minister of information. The establishment of a constitutional bench by a new judicial body headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan was one of the significant innovations.
